State & Local Advocacy

MHLA Lodging Members stay informed on issues impacting the industry and shape the Association's legislative priorities each year — protecting Maryland hotel operators from unforeseen threats.

MHLA is committed to No Room for Trafficking — an awareness program that builds on the industry's ongoing dedication to ending human trafficking. MHLA has successfully worked with policymakers at the state and local level to ensure mandated training requirements align with actions already proactively taken by the industry.

Lifeguard Mandate Defeated (SB139 – 2022)

Over many years, MHLA successfully advocated statewide for hotel operators' right to determine their own lifeguard needs. In 2022, MHLA opposed and defeated SB139 — which proposed requiring a lifeguard at all Maryland hotel pools.

Human Trafficking Prevention Policy

MHLA worked alongside policymakers to shape training mandates that reflect the industry's proactive approach — avoiding redundant requirements while keeping Maryland hotels at the forefront of prevention.
